When the family watches a Christmas special hosted past Krusty the Clown, Bart sees a commercial advertizing the fighting game Bonestorm, and decides he must take information technology. Withal, Marge tells him no, considering the Mortal Kombat-type game costs also much and is too trigger-happy. Bart makes other attempts to obtain or play the game, but they fail. At the Android'south Dungeon, Comic Book Guy tells Bart all available copies of the game take been rented; even so, multiple copies of the golf Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge (which is portrayed as beingness incredibly boring) remain. Passing it upward, Bart later learns that Milhouse has Bonestorm and goes over his house to play it, but Milhouse quickly has Bart thrown out considering he doesn't desire Bart to play his video games.
Discouraged, Bart visits the local Try-N-Save discount store. Within in the electronics section, a spoiled kid, named Gavin, demands that his mother buy him Bonestorm (she gives in), and Bart sees Jimbo and Nelson shoplifting from the store. Bart notices that the video game case has been left open, and hears the voices of various video game characters whispering to him. Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Sonic the Hedgehog tell him to become ahead and have the game, but Lee Carvallo tries to talk him out of it. No longer able to resist the temptation, Bart takes a copy of Bonestorm, hides it in his jacket, and walks out of the store.
Outside, Bart thinks he'southward home gratis, until he feels a heavy hand on his shoulder. He's been defenseless past the shop'due south merciless security officer, Detective Don Brodka. Bart is taken to a back room, where Brodka calls his parents (he leaves a bulletin because they weren't home) and tells him to leave and never return, or else he'll confront criminal charges. Bart races home, barely beating his parents (who are hurrying home themselves to change Maggie'southward diaper) to the door. He manages to supersede Brodka's phone message with some other record and hides the real tape. Bart has avoided trouble, temporarily.
Bart reacts after Marge finds out most him shoplifting.
The adjacent day, Marge announces plans to take their family's movie taken at a photographer'southward studio at Try-N-Save - the very store that Bart has been banned from entering. Bart tries to convince Marge to get elsewhere, but the family goes to the Endeavour-N-Relieve. Bart tries to avoid detection, but Brodka grabs him just equally the photographer snaps the picture. He explains to Marge and Homer that their son broke the "11th Commandment": 1000 shalt not steal. When Marge tells him that her son is not a shoplifter, the store detective shows them the surveillance tape on one of the TVs in the store. Bart blocks the Television set, crying out: "I did information technology!", but the incriminating tape is also playing on all the other TVs for sale, over and over again.
Back at the Simpson home, Bart'due south parents are very disappointed in him. Homer begins to lecture him, but goes off into a mindless rant about the Police force Academy movies, finally ending by maxim "stay outta my booze." Marge, however, becomes distant with her son and sends him to bed. Later, Bart is left out of family activities, such every bit decorating the Christmas tree and making snowfall statues of themselves.
Bart fears he has lost his mother'southward love, and decides he must repent. He visits the Endeavour-Northward-Save once more and talks to Brodka about his deportment to render the game, and returns home with a bulge in his coat. Marge confronts him, believing he was shoplifting over again, and finds Bart has hidden a handsome pic of himself (equally opposed to his usual wacky look in photos) bought every bit a Christmas present for Marge, with a receipt saying "Paid in full". Marge is overjoyed, and in gratitude for receiving her Christmas gift early, she gives Bart his, telling him it is the video game "every male child wants," according to the store clerk. Bart eagerly opens the present, only to notice out it'due south Lee Carvallo'due south Putting Challenge. Clearly, the clerk exploited Marge'south ignorance in club to unload the unpopular game. Although he's disappointed, Bart smiles and embraces his female parent, much to Marge's delight.
Equally the ending credits roll, Bart plays his new game, apparently trying to get as much excitement out of it every bit possible before giving up and stopping.

Later on this episode, new Christmas episodes were made almost every year.
The early on working title for the episode was "Bart the Stealer".[1] [two]
